Jamaica competed in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. They competed in one sport, Bobsledding, and finished outside the podium. George B. Fitch had suggested that Jamaica begin competing in the Winter Olympics saying, "You got great athletes, and a great athlete should be able to do any sport." Bobsledding was proposed because it played well to the strengths of Jamaicans sprinters. In 1993, Disney released Cool Runnings starring John Candy, which was loosely based on and inspired by the team's experience.
